Here is what we did: The second experiment we did was making fire extinguishers. The equipment we used were empty toilet rolls, vinegar, baking soda and a candle. First we put the baking soda into the vinegar. All the vinegar fizzed up and made carbon dioxide. We then used the empty toilet rolls to aim the carbon dioxide at the lit candle. That put out the candle. (By Jordan and Conor) We used: 1 candle Matches Vinegar Baking soda Spoon Plate Toilet roll holders Cup Method: Light the candle. Fill the cup with a little vinegar put a tsp of baking soda in the cup we used the toilet roll holder to aim the carbon dixode then the flame went out. (By Max and Eoghan) For the next experiment we had a plastic glass and 1/8 of it was full with vinegar. Next Mr Lane came around and lit our candle. After that Mr Lane came around with baking soda. We poured it into the vinegar. It fizzed up and finally we directed the carbon dioxide towards the candle. It blew out and we finished our very fun experiment thanks to Mr Lane. (By Paddy and Jamie O.) How does it work? Mixing vinegar and baking soda produces carbon dioxide. Then, as carbon dioxide is heavier than air, you can use empty toilet rolls to aim the carbon dioxide down at a candle flame. Fire needs oxygen in order to burn so when the carbon dioxide falls on the flame it suffocates it and the flame goes out. Have a look at the video below to see our fire extinguishers in action! We've been learning about Cúchulainn with Ms. Ryan. We'll write a post soon to show how much we've learned, but for now you can enjoy looking at this fantastic piece of artwork created by Billy and Mark on the blackboard.
We recently did projects. We had to choose a topic beginning with m. Here is Harry's project on Madagascar. Congratulations to Paddy, Aaron, Jamie and Ferrán who were on the school U11 hurling team who were successful a few weeks ago. They beat a strong Maynooth team in the final in Moorefield.
