The Curragh has existed in its current state for over 2000 years. The Curragh is almost 5000 acres big. Some of it is owned by the Army. There is an army base and some bunkers around the Curragh. It used to be owned by the British but the Irish took over control of the base. There are herds of sheep on the Curragh about 7000 sheep on the Curragh plains roaming around. The Curragh preserved land for the sheep and army barracks. No farmer is allowed to farm there and no builder is allowed to build on the Curragh. It is probably the oldest and biggest piece of semi natural grassland in Europe. Some tales say that St. Bridgid made the Curragh. The story goes that she wanted to build a church and she went to the king of Leinster to get some land. The king of Leinster was greedy and said you can have as much land as your cloak can cover. St. Bridgid held her cloak out and it went for miles around and she built her church on the land. There is a song by Christy Moore called The Curragh Of Kildare. There is a famous racecourse on the Curragh called the Curragh Racecourse. Many big events are held on the Curragh racecourse.
