St. Brigid by Eoghan S #countyblogs

10/6/2013

St.Brigid

Born:  c.453

Died: c.524

Her feast day is on February the 1st (Start of  Spring) it is said that she brings the spring.  Brigid may have been born in Dundalk  Co.Louth.  It is said that Brigid’s mother was a slave and Brigid herself was born into slavery to a druid.  As Brigid grows older she performs many miracles.   According to one tale she once gave away her mother’s entire store of butter.  The butter was then  replaced in answer of Brigid’s prayers.  St.Brigid spent most of her time in Kildare.

St.Brigid’s Cross

On February the 1st people make or buy St.Brigid’s crosses. It’s quite simple!  When you get the new cross you burn the old one to protect your house from fire.

Hi Eoghan from St. Joseph's in Kinvara, Galway
This is a great #countyblogs post. We just did all about about St Brigid in our Bun go Barr so it's great ot read this information. You have included lots of good points and I've learned a lot. For example I didn't know that you should burn the old St Brigid's cross when you make a new one so that you can protect your house from fire. Is that just in Co. Kildare do you think? Well done. Looking forward to reading more about Co. Kildare from Mr Lane's class.
